MUSIC | Maleek Berry - Last Daze of Summer

Hey Creatives!

"Kontrol," a quintessential hot line made into a hotter song, a dance floor banger which already has millions of plays on music streaming sites like Spotify and Soundcloud. To consider Maleek Berry, the London-based Nigerian producer and Starboy Entertainment newbie stagnate with his craft is a void argument. His work on Wizkid's "The Matter," Wande Coal's "Baby Hello," and Runtown's "Lagos To Kampala," and executive producing Wande Coal's "Wanted" album.

Last Daze of Summer, Berry's debut EP goes one step further and 6 songs farther, with a collection of uptempo records with an undeniable hit potential. It's long overdue for his own solo project considering his back to back co-created hits and his distinctive slightly nasally voice. "Flexin" and "Eko Miami" share identical drum arrangements, both are feel good songs about having money and living life. One of my favorite songs on the EP "Let Me Know," Berry asks a lady whom he's been "best friends for a year now" if he's more than just a friend to her. He goes as far as to say that he'd go as far as serving a life sentence for - what a commitment that is, but that's the beauty of pop music.

Berry's writing is convenient at best. The metaphors are tidy, but far from profound. For instance, "Nuh Let Go" when the rappers uses puns about operating on his love although he has no patience... Again it's pop, so it comes with the territory. "Kontrol," the EP's first single and first on the track list, is unquestionably the most successful song. Berry's talent dominates with simple and catchy hooks, instrumentals that are thumping, but not hideous. His lyrics are uninspired, but efficient enough. All in all, it's about shaking your bootay and not to be deciphered any further.

The project's sunniness and high energy enables and captures that fun and flighty summertime feel. The one aspect of summer that Last Daze Of Summer doesn't capture, rather, on "Let Me Know." The singer aptly details a year-long love chase that he hopes to make official before the summer runs out, the way he wouldn't have to keep chasing till summer '17. "Eko Miami" literally, that song is built around a slang that's slightly inconsistent with the idiosyncrasies of summertime as well. If you listen closely, Maleek is simply advocating for a good time on any dance floor whether it be in Miami or in Eko (Lagos, Nigeria). The EP is a sneak peak of what a full-length Maleek Berry project will sound like. Maleek is quip with his storytelling, he's relatable and believable. In "Flexin," he's on the come up and his quick to remind you that your girlfriend is just the homie, although he is the man. The major takeaway from the project is that Maleek wants the world to dance to his Afrobeats-Pop fusion sounds. I am very eager to hear what else is in store for Mr. Berry.

My favorites songs are "Kontrol," because, DUH. However, the extension should have been a lot longer due to its sweet melodic sounds. It's so sweet sounding especially with the transition from instrumental drums to a sweet soultry vibe. "Let Me Know," "Eko Miami" and "Flexin" are other faves as well.

Let me know what your faves songs are. Thank you for reading and be sure to connect!
