FOOD | Fig & Olive

Hey Creatives and Foodies :D

My #foodieforlife x friend Emily and I visited Fig & Olive in the Meatpacking district last week. Fig & Olive is a Riviera and Coastal restaurant inspired by the South of France, Italy and Spain. Groupon is currently offering a great deal, so I decided to purchase the $99 deal which offers: three crostini, one shared appetizer, two entrees and two glasses of wine or signature cocktails. Their menu changes seasonally, although there are staples which remain on the menu, year round. The options are rather extensive--however, there is a focus on Mediterranean ingredients (hence the name, "Fig & Olive"). The restaurant claims to source their ingredients sustainably, when possible, as well. This was my second time at a Fig & Olive restaurant and Emily's first neither did the food nor the service disappoint.

For starters, we both ordered our cocktails.

I had the Grand Marnier franboise peche sidecar (pictured left) and Emily had the Rossellini (pictured right). My cocktail was good, but I would say that is strong, if you are not a fan of "old-fashioned" style cocktails, I'd pass on this.

Excuse the aesthetically UNpleasant photo!
Crostini (L-R) We ordered the manchego, fig, marcona almond (Both of our favs!). This was so good! The sweetness of the fig jam and the savoriness and tartness of the manchego cheese made an excellent pairing and the almond added a nice crunch. The shrimp, avocado, cilantro, tomato crostini reminded me a Spanish style avocado toast, the use of cilantro was spot on, it added a je ne sais quoi, made it taste almost pesto like.  Lastly, the mushroom, artichoke, truffle, parmesan crostini was served cold, which I was not expecting, it was eh-okay. Perhaps if it was warm the truffle flavor would have been more pungent.

Prosciutto me baby!
Our shared appetizer - fig gorgonzola tartlet (prosciutto, gorgonzola dolce, fig, walnut, arugula, scallion, tomato on thin puff pastry) this appetizer was so good. There was a great balance of sweet, savory and salty. It was like unwrapping a Christmas present, the gorgonzola and fig was hiding underneath the arugula, the thin pastry held it perfectly.

Entree!
I had the paella del mar (black tiger shrimp, sea scallop, calamari, mussel, saffron rice, green pea, red bell pepper artichoke, saffron aioli, pimenton & oregano) and Emily ordered the Mediterranean Branzino. I love a good rice dish and the paella was excellent! You get a generous serving of seafood. If you have never had paell squeezed the lime to add a dash of acidity to the dish. We were also served complimentary rosemary bread with a side of three olive oils for dipping, they included a buttery flavored, lighter and greener and a peppery olive oil.

Be sure to check out Fig & Olive and enjoy some really good food! The service is amazing and it is a perfect date night and/or girls night out spot. They also participate in NYC restaurant week in the Winter and Summer.

Stay Creative,
