CULTURE | Podcasts You NEED To Listen To

Hey Creatives!

If you're like me, you enjoy a good podcast or 20. Seriously!

I've been listening to podcast for over four years and the first being The Read and I have not turned back since. I want you to get an insight as to what I enjoy listening too.

1. For an hour to two Kid Fury and Crissle from The Read are your best friends. Fury and Crissle dominate the comedy podcast realm, they're young, queer and hella cool! They offer a sensitive perspective on pop culture, race, sexual identity and the minority experience and better than most news outlets out here. They are shady, honest and read like it's the last piece of literature on earth. From the ever changing Shade in Full (like a hot topics segment), Black Excellence, Listener Letters and The Read.

2. Making Oprah - This podcast works out how Oprah became not only the biggest daytime show of all time, but also a cultural phenomenon. The enthusiasm of the host, Jenn White and the progression of the stories and changing media ropes you in. The evolving landscape and tales about the show's memorable episodes. This podcast need more than 6 episodes, it gives you a glimpse of Oprah and how how she had to work to get where she is and stay there. Give it a listen and share your thoughts.

3.Bodega Boys - The chemistry that happens in the recording studio between Desus Nice and The Kid Mero cannot, I repeat cannot be replicated. From the variation of characters and voices there's serious magic happening here. Consider it a contact high in your earbuds, you get "alternative" news, hoodnomics, school of hard knock and so much. They also have a show on Vice. Check them out!

4. Terrible, Thanks for Asking - is how Nora McInerny, the host really wants to answer. This is honesty. The show begins with Nora begins with a miscarriage, the loss of her husband and father to cancer within the span of six weeks. Yea, she's terrible thanks for asking. Heavy. Nora explores her own grief through other people's and she's darn good at it! Each episode begins with how she's coping, then jumps to someone else's story. What makes the show exciting is the uncertainty about what her grief brings up in the listener and what she’s driving at with her guests. You can’t predict how you’re going to feel with McInerny at the helm.

5. Another Round - So say you sit down with friends for a drink or two and they happen to Tracey Clayton and Heben Niguatu from Buzzfeed. These two hilarious writers talk about race, politics, pop culture and self-care. The self care aspect makes their podcast very unique, constantly reminding their audience to take care of themselves. So "Drink yo' water, take your meds and call your person."

 6. The Friend Zone - Imagine yourself and some funny and insightful friends just cutting up, but hitting really important issues - Welcome to The Friend Zone ! This podcast co-hosted by HeyFranHey, Dustin Ross and Assante delivers conversations on an array of tropic stemming from mental health, mental hygiene and everything in between, literally ;) Their chemistry is on a million, you will laugh nonstop, be in your feelings and always leave with something tangible. Because who in the hell wants a musty brain?

7. My Taught You - Need a big sis to help you get your life? Then you're in the right place! Myleik Teele, the CEO of Curlbox is super honest with insight of the challenges and high moments of professionalism and entrepreneurship. She talks about interviewing, networking, branding yourself and how to meet your goals. Her transparency is refreshing and reels you in with every episode. Teele sheds light on having no real blueprint for success and what worked for her to get to where she is.
