MUSIC | Tiwa Savage - Sugarcane

Hey Creatives!

If you've ever run through Tiwa Savage's catalog, you'll see that she creates art through music. Said art documents changes and growth in her life. Her music is dancey with a dash of praising God all tied up in a beautiful floral package. It's feminine, sultry, dulcet, sexy and all woman! Being a woman in the music industry is not an easy feat, especially if you are in Africa, however, Tiwa Savage since she stepped her feet into it, hasn't been affected. Her latest project, an EP Sugarcane dropped this Fall with six tracks.

The EP drips with loves tunes similar to her earlier records like Love Next Door or Ife Wa Gbona. She alternates between Yoruba and English in breezy harmonies and beautifully layered riffs. Sugarcane was an unanticipated project that dropped right before our ears (learning from Queen Bey, huh?), the project is flavorsome with some depth. Tiwa is putting her heart on display after some scandal and edible caterers. What I wonder the most about this project is the coyness of the EP's title. Are we talking the fruit found in mostly tropical areas in the world or...phallic implication! haha!

Sugarcane is a project that puts Tiwa on top of the female pop pile; sex appeal, controlled R&B  sex appeal, controlled R&B vocal styling and an ease with certain kinds of production. There are no superfluous cuts. Just like most of her songs, this project is about a man. with her opener, 'Sugarcane,' a more fast-paced track is tributes her enormousness to him. As she says, "I'm down for whatever, so baby come give me some sugar, sugarcane..." The EP slows down with the next, 'Get It Now', Me & You, and 'Hold Me Down'. 'Me & You', produced by my musical bae Maleek Berry. Although his vocals provide a shadowy effect, Tiwa doesn't own the song like she does in 'Sugarcane.' She however, holds her own in 'Ma Lo' featuring superstar Wizkid.

"Na because of you wey I get goosebumps... This one na Julie Julie and Romeo, Original Ogbongolo bo bo oh (bo bo bo bo bo)," She explains in 'All Over'. I was in Nigeria, when All Over, her fist single dropped and when I tell you I danced nonstop, 'twas a hit! Sugarcane is a feel good, romance-embracing project. Although the songs are codified and stripped of personal reference, it allows for a universal reference and reliability. This will definitely allot for Tiwa's gains and positioning she puts herself in.

My faves include: Sugarcane, Ma Lo, All Over & Hold Me Down. What are yours?
